Halleluiah! Progressive Democrat Nancy Rotering, Mayor of Highland Park, IL, since 2011, will contend in the 2016 Democratic Congressional Primary against Brad Schneider, a one term wonder defeated in 2014 by the former incumbent, a Republican moderate, whatever that is. Democrats should own this District, the Illinois 10th, where Governor Romney lost big to President Obama in 2012.
Under Mayor Rotering's leadership, Highland Park passed an assault weapons ban in 2013 and defended it in federal court against the usual rifle association wackos. Highland Park ultimately received vindication by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. The ban is valid.
Now a Congressional candidate, Mayor Rotering has thrown her full support behind state legislation that would empower other Illinois cities, towns and villages to enact similar bans. Mayor Rotering supports assault weapons bans as an open response to the Sandy Hook tragedy.
"As a mom of four sons, the memories of Sandy Hook ran through my mind as we took the vote to regulate weapons," Rotering said. "As a mayor, banning assault weapons is a common sense step to reducing gun violence and protecting our children, our law enforcement and our communities from potential mass violence and grief."
Nancy Rotering is not just a strongly credentialed candidate with a history of electoral success. She also stands proudly on her record of other progressive accomplishments.
From her campaign website:
“I am running for Congress to fight for educational opportunities for our students and economic fairness for all Americans,” stated Rotering. “I will be a consistent advocate for a woman’s right to choose, for accessibility to quality health care and a staunch ally to Israel, our only democratic ally in the Middle East. I bring a lifetime of advocacy reflecting the progressive values of our District and a record of producing real results to a Congress that has achieved little in recent years,” added Rotering.

watchdogs report that her fundraising is off to a strong start, along with substantial self-funding. The former incumbent, Brad Schneider, of course, has the backing of the DCCC and would be well funded, anyway, by his corporate backers for whom he was a compliant lick-spittle during his single term from 2013 to 2015. But the primary looks to be fought out on more or less equal financial terms.
This is a rare chance to help build up the Congressional Progressive Caucus while flipping a seat in Congress from red to blue. Help if you can.
